Was Cash for Clunkers a Crash Course or Successful Campaign?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Everyone who lives in the continental United States heard of the Cash for Clunkers program and what the government hoped it would do for the struggling economy. The up-to $4500 trade-in value for a “clunker” was definitely enough to get a lot of people’s attention. There were some stipulations on what you could buy after trading in your clunker – the car had to be a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. The program was such a hit in the beginning that the government ran out of funds and had to extend the deadline.

All in all, this program was a great way for a lot of people to get rid of old, environmentally damaging vehicles and get in to a new, reliable car. In order to qualify for a trade in, the vehicle could not be more than 25 years old, must be drivable and insured for at least a year and get 18mpg or less. Of course, there were bound to be certain vehicles that topped the list of most traded-in cars during Cash for Clunkers. Consumer Reports put together a top ten list of the most traded-in vehicles and the top ten purchased vehicles:

  1. Toyota Corolla
  2. Honda Civic
  3. Ford Focus
  4. Toyota Camry
  5. Hyundai Elantra
  6. Toyota Prius
  7. Nissan Versa
  8. Ford Escape FWD
  9. Honda Fit
  10. Honda CR-V AWD

  1. Ford Explorer 4WD
  2. Ford F150 Pickup 2WD
  3. Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD
  4. Jeep Cherokee 4WD
  5. Ford Explorer 2WD
  6. Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan
  7. Chevrolet Blazer 4WD
  8. Ford F-150 Pickup 4WD
  9. Chevrolet C1500 Pickup 2WD
  10. Ford Windstar

Traded-In Vehicles Purchased Vehicles

Now, the obvious objective of this government program was to help the struggling automotive industry – the American automakers in particular. The interesting thing about these lists compiled by Consumer Reports is the status of American car companies. Each car in the top ten vehicles that were traded in were from an American car company and 80% of the purchased cars are from Asian manufacturers. It’s good news that Ford nabbed the other two spots in the top ten, but it makes you wonder if this program achieved what the government hoped it would.

The main goal of the Cash for Clunkers program was to boost auto sales and feed money back into the American economy. With a majority of the new cars purchased hailing from Asian markets, how much good did this program do? Now, the program did get over 600,000 gas guzzlers off the nation’s highways which is a definite positive. The program also however, put a lot more foreign cars on the roads rather than American. It was still an economy booster for the auto industry and dealers across the nation with auto sales rising 10.6% according to government statistics.

While many of the new cars purchased under the Cash for Clunkers program were foreign, this did still help the American industry. Many of the foreign companies like Honda have stated they will be increasing production of their cars in the United States. Even if they are not American cars, an increase in automotive production creates reveneue for American factories of foreign brands, thus opening up jobs here in the states. When it comes down to it, the Cash for Clunkers program seems to have been a huge success drawing a lot of customers to once empty car lots. There was a lot of revenue created for dealers, even outside of the government program and increased sales in a struggling industry, even if only for a short time.

A New Legend Takes to the Streets

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The days of solid, powerful muscle cars have surely been replaced by fuel efficient, “green” cars. It was a thrilling time for car afficianados everywhere as they anticipated the release of an updated American legend - the Camaro. The Camaro ruled the streets in the late 1960’s and is one of the most recognized muscle cars ever produced. It is an American classic that managed to stand the test of time and stay in the hearts of American car lovers.

That’s why when Chevrolet announced they were releasing a new, redesigned Camaro in 2010 the air was a-buzz with excitement. The last Camaro was produced in 2002 and with interest peaking in more fuel efficient cars, attention on the beloved Camaro was waning. Putting production of the Camaro on hold was a smart decision by Chevrolet. With an eight year silence between the last production and when the new Camaro was unveiled, its sleek but powerful lines captured consumers attention once again.

The new Camaro’s design is both reminiscent of its old, boxy muscle car days and futuristic with sharp angles and modern elements. The base model comes standard with a V6 manual transmission engine and a minimum of 304 horsepower. This base model has an MSRP of $22,680. A top of the line model comes equipped with a V8 manual transmission engine and 426 horsepower. That is more than enough to give you some get up and go off the line!

Often times, there is a lot of worry that a new car won’t live up to the hype that is built up before its release. This definitely does not seem to be the case with the new Chevy Camaro. According to reviews on Edmunds.com, the Camaro undeniably lives up to expectations. It has extraordinary acceleration, great handling, sleek looks and a manageable price tag. The V6 engine boasts an acceleration of zero to sixty in 6.0 seconds thanks to its awesome horsepower. With this acceleration it still manages to pull off 17mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway. This is awesome fuel efficiency for such a powerful engine; a feat that hardly any sports car can boast.

The interior of the Camaro does leave something to be desired by many reviewers. The steering wheel is oddly designed and does not seem to be very comfortable for drivers. Some of the gauges are hard to read and options for the interior are lacking. The Camaro does not come with a factory option for a built-in navagation system. Another downside is the small trunk; fitting a set of golf clubs could prove to be difficult. The backseat is also quite small, making it difficult for passengers to make a long trip. These downsides however, are small sacrifices to those die hard muscle car lovers. Most consumers looking for this type of car aren’t as worried about fitting their golf clubs in the trunk as they are about experiencing a cool, powerful ride underneath their feet and the new Camaro definitely delivers.

Diesel vs Gas - Who will Win?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

In this article I’m going to discuss the properties of the diesel and gas engines, and compare them to each other. Specifically their usage in cars.

Looking at them from a distance both the gas and the diesel engine work in about the same way. Fuel manufactured from refined crude burns in the cylinder forcing the piston to move from the resulting pressure. The movement of the piston is then transferred to the wheels through crankshaft, gearbox and transmission.

It’s when you look closer at the two engines that you start to see the differences. Differences in gas mileage, smell, vibrations, price and expected age to name a few.

With a gas engine there is an ignition system that uses high voltage electricity with wiring and spark plugs. This is not needed in a diesel as it compresses the air n the cylinder until it’s hot enough to ignite the fuel when injected. In a gas engine the spark plug ignites the fuel/air mixture by sending a high voltage spark into it at the right time.

Another thing that separates the diesel from the gas engine is that gas engines adds the fuel vapor to the air in the intake manifold either through a carburetor or through fuel injection nozzles. The air/fuel mixture is then sucked into the cylinder to be burnt the next time the piston strikes.

The diesel on the other hand sucks clean air into the cylinder and then waits for the piston to compress the air as much as it will go. At this time when the air is compressed and hot enough to ignite the fuel, diesel is injected directly into the cylinder (or a small space connected to the cylinder) through high pressure nozzles. The fuel ignites instantly due to the high temperature in the cylinder.

The differences is fuel injection and ignition results in the diesel burning the fuel more efficiently than the gas engine. That’s why diesels have better fuel economy than it’s gas burning relatives.

I’m not saying that a diesel engine is better. It’s different, it has drawbacks too. A diesel engine is usually more difficult to start in cold, and especially in freezing weather. As you may remember it was the hot compressed air that ignited the fuel. If it’s cold enough outside the air will not become hot enough and it will not ignite the fuel, then the engine will not start.

To handle this diesels have something called glow plugs for handling cold start situations. Electrical power from the accumulator is used to preheat the glow plugs inside the cylinders before the engine is started. That way the fuel is ignited by the hot glow plugs while the cylinder and air is still too cold to do it. A couple of seconds after the engine has started it is usually hot enough to ignite the fuel without the help of the glow plugs and these are not used again until the next cold start.

This is one of the nuisances of having a diesel in your car. Glowing can take from a couple of second to half a minute and can be quite a stress if in a hurry. You just have to wait until it’s ready or the car won’t start. On a more expensive engine the glowing does not take long, it might not even be required, and you’ll soon get accustomed to it.

Lets for a second look at the practical differences between the diesel and the gas engine. The diesel is large and loud, it emits black smoke when accelerating and is generally regarded as bad smelling by those not owning one. In addition it has a more robust construction because of the high compression is must handle and can usually go twice as many miles as the same size gas engine during it’s life. The sturdier construction also makes it more expensive when first bought.

Features of The Gas Engine

  • More quiet that the diesel
  • Better acceleration and higher top speed
  • Uses an Ignition System with Spark Plugs to Light The Fuel
  • Adds fuel to the air before letting it into the cylinder
  • Not as sturdy as a diesel. Lower price but breaks down faster
  • Gas readily available everywhere
  • MPG is low compared to a diesel

The Diesel Engine

  • The diesel engine is loud and has the sound of an agricultural machine or an 18 wheeler
  • Slow acceleration (get one with turbo charger, that helps)
  • Top speed is nothing to brag about but there should be no problem maintaining the speed limit in most places
  • Glow plugs helps ignite the fuel when the engine is really cold
  • Clean air is sucked into the cylinder, then fuel oil is injected
  • Engine is simple and robust. High price tag but can run many miles
  • Emits black smoke when loading it (like a quick acceleration)
  • Can be converted to run on Eco fuel oils
  • Has a great gas mileage

If I where to give you advice on selecting either a gas or a diesel powered car I would tell you this: Get a diesel if you drive long trips and can live with the small nuisances of more noise and poor acceleration. Get a gas powered car if you drive less than average or if you just want the comfort at any price.
